Ear Wax FAQ’s
What is Ear Wax Buildup?
Cerumen is a thick, waxy oil that is naturally produced in the ear canal, though you most likely know it by its better-known name: ear wax. Even though you might think of ear wax as an annoyance, it actually serves an important purpose. The wax helps protect your ear from foreign particles, dust, and microorganisms and is also a safeguard against irritation caused by water. Normally, excess wax emerges into the opening of the ear on its own, where it easily washes away.
However, your glands can sometimes make an excessive amount of ear wax. Then, the wax can become hard, blocking the ear and building up over time. Additionally, because many people clean their ears using cotton swabs – despite this being something that professionals recommend avoiding – the wax is easily pushed deeper into the ear. The result is a blockage, which may lead to a range of symptoms.
What Causes of Ear Wax Buildup?
If you are dealing with excess ear wax or even a blockage issue, there are many potential contributors to the problem. Although some people are naturally prone to producing more ear wax than needed, that alone usually doesn’t cause blockage or severe buildup.
Instead, the most common cause of ear wax buildup is attempting to remove it at home. You might think that using a cotton swab, bobby pin, or other objects is a simple way to clean out your ears, but this method actually has the opposite effect. In fact, at-home ear wax removal frequently leads to buildup because it pushes wax deeper into the canal and can cause a blockage. Furthermore, it is all too easy to inadvertently damage your ear – so avoid DIY removal at all costs.
Another factor that can increase the likelihood of ear wax buildup is regular headphones and hearing aids use. Unfortunately, earbuds and hearing aids can prevent ear wax’s natural exit from the ear canals.
Both adults and children can experience a buildup in ear wax, though it more often becomes problematic for older adults.
How Do You Remove Ear Wax?
Because excess ear wax is such a widespread issue, it’s not surprising that one of the most common ear-related search inquiries is, “how do I get rid of ear wax?”. However, even though you can find a long list of suggested ear wax remedies online, you should never attempt to remove wax on your own. It’s unlikely that you will be able to effectively get rid of the buildup, and it’s even possible that you can accidentally cause long-term damage or serious infection.
What is the Earigator™?
The Earigator™ is a newly-debuted ear irrigation system, meaning that it’s designed to “rinse out” the ear canal and structure with a safe and well-tested approach. This unique tool combines all the functionality of a traditional ear irrigation system with an otoscope, which allows the nurse or doctor to maintain full view and control of the process.
Here are just a few other features of the Earigator™ that makes it a particularly exciting new option for our patients:
- The machine has a self-contained temperature control function, which consistently regulates the water to match your body temperature. As a result, you can avoid any caloric effects or unwanted sensations of vertigo (common side effects of other irrigation methods).
- Precision-level pressure controls ensure quick, effective removal of even the most stubborn buildup, all while eliminating risk to the eardrum.
The procedure is much faster than traditional methods, taking just 3-5 minutes per ear.
- Unlike other methods for removing ear wax buildup, the Earigator™ has no reported side effects of lingering discomfort.
- Instead of having to come to Memorial Hearing for a consultation, then pursue a referral for ear wax removal elsewhere, you can now enjoy the convenience and comfort of completing the entire process in our Houston audiologist office.
